Slim to none chance we will see one in North America, but they are building them at the LFA factory for Toyota UK and Toyota Germany . So LHD is possible! The specs are very nice — even at the current conversion amount starting under $40k USD.

GIB!

We’re supposed to be getting a GR Corolla within the next couple years.

Grand Rouring :p

Why even bother with a separate 2-door body? The 2-door is only used for the GR Yaris; the regular Yaris is 4-door only. They should make a GR 4-door Yaris.

And it would be nice if they sold the Yaris (GR and regular) in the US. Mazda is cool, but it’s not as good as Toyota :o)

$40k is a ridiculous price for one of these. Fiesta ST was under $20k, Abarth 500 had to have a price reduction to be competitive and it was still super pricey - mine ended up being over $27000 msrp. Veloster N is $32k, GTI starts way under $30k, WRX is under $30k...

If one crosses the Atlantic I’d love to try it. It will take a lot to make me give up on the Abarth though.

You've only suggested one vehicle that compares: WRX, and it's only sort of.  1.6L I-3 turbo, awd, and designed out of the box for motorsports.  That's pretty impressive.

Very special. I want one sooooo bad.

I wouldn't be surprised if Toyota US insist that it can only have a CVT.

I'm still struggling with the Car Pervert's new format. I 110% agree for his needed to go in the new direction (sponsors) -- maybe it's just becoming something that could be televised now versus the sometimes awkward interactions.

I’m thinking it may help him get better access to  cars and intervie wees sooner. This is a good thing. He's mentioned he'll keep the awkwardness but I haven't really seen it lately.

It’s like a modern Impreza 22B.

If they’d be cross-shopped , they compare. I love all the cars I mentioned and I would consider buying any of them. $40k puts you in a AWD 300+ HP Golf R or and STI. It’s just too expensive. WRX has the same 268 HP for $12000 less.

I can see it selling for $32000. Honestly, that would be a more realistic price in USA as the cars here are usually cheaper.

Because sport. You’ve reminded me how much I dislike the fact that the Civic Type R is four door hatch only now.

Agreed. I feel this car is just overhyped. If you need awd just get a WRX. It’s cheaper, has a proven platform, and a much better aftermarket/community. 40k gets you into an STI or Golf R which both have awd.

Overhyped - no, not at all. It is an amazing piece of engineering. I’d love to have it around here. But, the price of $40000 is nuts. That’s my only gripe.

It’s not all about raw numbers - I went from an  Abarth to a WRX back to an Abarth because it is just so much more fun than the soulless WRX. I have a feeling this little car would be a blast, but again, the price is not right.

On this point I can definitely agree.  Unfortunately, it will never be built in the US to get those prices

Well so can coupes and sooting brakes apparently but that doesn’t mean they SHOULD.

The Maxima is still good but it's no GR Yaris.

Yeah the GR Yaris is awesome, and so is the non-GR Yaris.

The extra doors are more useful tho

I find it hard to believe that they wouldn’t produce a regular or even lukewarm two door to try to make up the cost. Reminds me of when the Civic SI was its own body style here in the US. But that was at the very least a body style they’d already made for other markets.

I’ll take the two door if they have it. Those rear doors won’t open wide enough to be easy to get in and out of anyways.

Even imported cars are cheaper in USA, so there is a chance :)

It’s a serious tragedy the Type R never came as a coupé. I know they don’t manufacture the coupé in UK where the Type Rs are built but come on!

And there is a slower FWD non-turbocharged GR Yaris RS in Japan I think.

As seen on the GR Supra, Toyota seems to use the GR as a prefix on standalone sporty models, as opposed to GR as a suffix on existing tuned models. So Toyota seems to consider it a separate model from the regular Yaris for added specialness. It’s an awesome limited -ish lower-volume homologation special that takes 10 times as long to build as a regular Yaris with a different platform (front half Yaris, back half Corolla), so if you’re going to have that many changes, why wouldn’t you make a unique body?

A new Corolla All Trac would be great. I have been attracted to the Yaris family recently but that is most likely due to watching the Bad Obsession Bargain Racement series . The version they are running only makes 68hp and looks like a lot of fun.

True, it was never going to share much with the regular Yaris. I didn’t know the back half was basically Corolla parts/geometry. It’s so gloriously crazy I can’t fault them. Besides, you don’t buy one of these to drive your kids around. It deserves full throttle all the time and few passengers like that.

Huh, I hadn’t heard about the GR lite . I guess it wouldn’t make much sense to outfit the factory in the UK to produce another body style but maybe they could be shipped complete knockdown kits for the body? Maybe they could even introduce the coupe in England as a Type R only body style that way like they did with the US Si in the 2000s.

Kinja'd!!!

I just Honda made a Civic coupe and proceeded to forget it existed. I see very few on the roads.

Isn’t the corolla heavier than the Yaris? That extra weight would take away from some of the “sportiness”.
